The road is home for family traveling USA in their RV

Tom and Mary Claire Wahl are homeless. Well, kind of homeless. They don't have a house. Or a hometown. What they have is a 41-foot recreational vehicle that they are driving around America, joined by their three children: Joe, 12, Anna, 10, and Sam, 7. In the past eight months they have traveled almost 16,000 miles, visited 26 states, stayed over at 29 national parks and clipped at least seven trees. They're about halfway through their journey. Sometime in the next six months, they'll pick a new hometown, buy a house and settle down.

"We always kind of joked about this kind of trip, but it never seemed it could be a reality," says Mary Claire, 46, a nurse/midwife who retired as a lieutenant colonel from the United States Air Force last July. "Then at retirement we didn't have a home, we had no job, and we realized that was a blessing."

Campground Reviews

Campgrounds we have stayed in are rated on a 1 to 5 pug scale (1 being worst and 5 being best). The rating is a subjective combination on campground appearance, amenities, location and our experience. It should go without saying that all of these accept at least small dogs. We do not update these listings unless we visit the park again, so we cannot be responsible for any changes that may have happened since our last visit.

Any parks marked with an asterisk (*) were Passport America parks when we last stayed there. We do recommend Passport America membership because it saves us quite a bit on camping fees each year.

We strongly recommend Trailer Life RV Parks, Campgrounds, and Services Directory 2009 (Trailer Life Directory : Campgrounds, Rv Parks & Services) if you are doing much camping at all. We don't leave a campground without it.

NOW THAT THE HOLIDAYS ARE OVER , THE NEW YEAR IS UPON US AND SPRING IS AROUND THE CORRNER. IT IS TIME TO BRING OUT YOUR MOTORHOME/RV EQUIPMENT AND GET THOSE WHEELS ROLLING AGAIN. AS A NEW AUTHUR FOR THE SOLERA RV GROUP, I AM LOOKING FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN GETTING INVOLVED WITH A RV GROUP RIGHT HERE IS OWN BACKYARD. I AM ENVOLVED WITH SEVERAL PRE-PLANNED TRIPS VIA OTHER GROUPS THAT I WILL GLADLY SHARE WITH ANYONE THAT IS INTERESTED. MOST OF THESE TRIPS INCURR TRAVEL OUT OF THE AREA, BUT ALL HAVE PREPLANNED ACTIVITIES AND IS MADE UP GROUPS LOOKING FOR FUN, FOOD, AND FELLOWSHIP. The following Rules of the Road are compiled each year via mailings to state/provincial highway departments and/or police departments. Some changes may have been made since this data was compiled. For additional regulations not addressed in this section, we suggest that you contact the state or provincial agency listed. While every attempt has been made to check this information, the Woodall’s Campground Directory cannot guarantee its accuracy, and assumes no responsibility for errors and omissions.

CALIFORNIA: Maximum RV width 102 in.; maximum motorhome length 40 ft.(45 ft. on some highways); maximum trailer length 40 ft.; maximum RV height 14 ft.; maximum combined length for two-vehicle combination, 65 ft. Riding is allowed in truck campers if passengers are seat-belted; in fifth-wheel trailers with safety glass and an audible or visual device connected with tow vehicle, plus at least one exit must be able to be opened from both outside and inside the trailer. Vehicles towing trailers or dinghies are restricted to the right-hand lane. Overnight parking in rest areas not allowed. RV Safety Requirements: Over 1,500 lbs.: trailer brakes, breakaway switch and safety chains. All power-brake systems require breakaway switch. Chains may be required during winter months on mountain roads. Driving Laws: Right turn on red permitted, unless posted otherwise (but not on red arrow). At least two/three riders for carpool lane as posted. Wilderness expert and survivalist Brian Brawdy teaches eco-friendly living from his Lance Camper. Many people begin RVing to become more connected with the outdoors. Adventurer Brian Brawdy likewise began RVing to enhance his already strong connection with nature, but he set forth with an additional objective: to inspire the folks he meets to take a proactive roll in their lives and in the environment.

Currently embarking on a 49-state tour of the United States that began last February, Brawdy has become a well-known spokesperson for eco-awareness by studying the relationship between people and the outdoors. Brawdy has made appearances on CBS’s The Early Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, and multiple news segments for Fox News, CNN, NBC and countless local news outlets.
